Which PMP application path should you investigate?

Explore the published numerical thresholds for the four education pathways. This does not check your documents, verify professional experience or submit an application to PMI.

Official numerical experience minimum for your selected route36 months

Enter only your non-overlapping professional project-leadership months from the ten years before your application. PMI verifies the underlying projects.

Plan for at least 35 eligible training hours unless you hold an active CAPM certification. Self-study reading and practice tests alone do not fulfill the 35-hour commercial training requirement.

Important: Meeting a numerical threshold is not PMI eligibility approval. PMI also verifies the credential level, professionally led temporary project work, non-overlap of experience and eligible training. The actual PMI application and handbook always control.

Live training provider rules tighten in December

BEFORE

Eligible 35-hour training could come from qualifying providers including independent live courses.

AFTER

For live instructor-led courses, PMI will recognize only ATPs, China REPs or eligible accredited academic programs. Self-paced training remains available from any organization.

WHO IS AFFECTED

People choosing an instructor-led course from 1 December 2026 onward; previously completed training remains eligible.

WHAT TO DO

Before paying for a live course, verify the provider's ATP/REP/accredited status. If you completed training earlier, preserve the completion record.

EXPLAINED FOR CANDIDATES

Candidate's field guide

What you should know before applying

There is no single annual PMP examination date. You apply through PMI, receive eligibility approval, and book an available exam appointment. An available calendar slot is not the same as an application window. Professional project leadership must be demonstrated without double-counting overlapping months, and everyday operational duties or personal school projects are not automatically eligible experience.

PMI lists several education and project-leadership experience pathways: a secondary-school qualification plus five years, associate/vocational qualification plus four years, bachelor’s or higher plus three years, or a GAC-accredited degree plus two years. PMI assesses qualifying experience from the last 10 years.

  1. Choose your education pathway and document non-overlapping project leadership experience.
  2. Complete 35 qualifying training hours or check whether your active CAPM credential fulfills that condition.
  3. Apply in your own PMI account, then review the authorization and available appointments.

Studying after the 2026 exam refresh

The July refresh shifts a much larger share of the blueprint to business environment and outcomes. People is now 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. The themes include AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. Learning only definitions from an older study guide is a risky strategy.

Older books are not automatically worthless. Core project management methods still matter. Compare your existing syllabus chapter by chapter with the new Exam Content Outline; spend incremental study time on the changed domains and scenario-based questions.

  1. Download the revised outline from PMI rather than relying on a prep vendor's summary.
  2. Mark areas your current course omits, especially business environment and value delivery.
  3. Confirm whether a new live training class meets PMI's December provider rule before enrolling.

Inside the July 2026 exam: cases, graphics and breaks

PMI's July 2026 Examination Content Outline confirms 180 total questions, 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest items randomly mixed into the exam, with 240 minutes of allotted exam time. You cannot distinguish an unscored question while testing, so treat every item seriously.

For centre-based testing, the first 10-minute break follows the case-study section and the second occurs roughly midway through independent questions. Once a section is reviewed and a break begins, you cannot revisit that earlier section. Online-proctored testing has additional modality-specific instructions: read the current PMI/Pearson VUE candidate rules instead of assuming the same check-in or break procedure.

The official outline illustrates scenario sets, graphic-based items and enhanced matching. The sample material describes question *types*, not an exact proportion or guaranteed number of graphs on your personal exam.

  1. Practice reading a scenario and extracting the decision, risk, stakeholder and business-value constraints before selecting a response.
  2. Try chart-reading and matching exercises from PMI's 2026 content outline; do not repost copyrighted example questions as your own.
  3. Before check-in, confirm test-centre or remote-testing identification, security, break and review rules in your official appointment details.

Fees, 2027 timing and renewals

PMI publishes no single universal 2027 PMP exam day: eligible candidates apply, obtain PMI approval, and choose an available test appointment. A training-policy effective date is not a mass exam registration deadline.

PMI's updated outline says the exam can be attempted up to three times during the one-year eligibility period, with restrictions following unsuccessful attempts. Use the current certification handbook and your PMI account to confirm your individual eligibility window before buying travel or retake appointments.

Exam pricing and member discounts can change. This page deliberately avoids a permanent quoted fee; verify the amount shown in your own PMI checkout. PMP also requires ongoing renewal under PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements and PDU program.

IN-DEPTH CANDIDATE DOSSIER

Beyond the updated blueprint: eligibility evidence, exam-day friction and how to avoid an expensive scheduling mistake

The PMP credential is governed by PMI certification policy, not a U.S. state professional-licensing statute. Its exam and experience requirements should not be described as federal law.

What July 2026 candidates actually reported

These are attributed public self-reports, not independently authenticated pass records or representative exam statistics. We draw practical lessons without treating personal impressions as PMI policy.

PUBLIC FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT · 2026-07-10

A candidate faced an unexpected booking gap across the switch

A July 10 account says the candidate tried to find a slot for the old examination on July 4, found none, and ultimately took the new online exam July 9. They described entering the remote check-in queue ahead of time.

Editorial takeaway: Never build a plan assuming an old exam version will remain bookable until its last eligible day. Schedule early, verify the exam version on the authorization and prepare the room, computer and identity check well before the start.

Experienced practitioners still differed in how they studied

In a 17 July 2026 self-report, a senior project manager said practical professional experience and independently viewed scenario-thinking videos were helpful, while noting that a paid practice tool went largely unused. That is a single person's study pattern, not evidence everyone can pass without practice exams.

Editorial takeaway: Compare your own experience, knowledge gaps and familiarity with the new format. Do not treat a reported minimal-prep success as a preparation plan or an official pass-rate statistic.

Three candidate decisions that change the answer

I paid for an older course and have already completed the 35 hours.

The July examination content refresh does not automatically invalidate previously completed qualifying training. Keep evidence, then align your study to the 2026 content outline.

I plan to start live instruction in December 2026.

Do not assume a class qualifies because it advertises PMP preparation. Verify whether PMI recognizes its provider under the rules applicable when the training is taken.

I failed under the former exam and want to retake after July 9.

Study for the currently administered 2026 blueprint. PMI permits up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period, but the official handbook and your account determine the relevant conditions and fees; a prior attempt does not reserve the old exam version.

Evidence limitations

Candidate posts are voluntary self-reports: we have not authenticated exam results or calculated a representative pass rate. Claims about the exact case-question count, number of graphs or where breaks occurred on one person's exam are not universal formats; the July 2026 PMI examination outline governs the formal structure. A 2027 worldwide exam date should never be inferred from the July 2026 launch.

06
COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace all my pre-July 2026 books?

Not necessarily. PMI says core principles remain useful. Supplement them with the new official content outline and updated scenarios.

Do the new December 2026 training rules apply retroactively?

PMI says training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the existing requirements.

When does registration close, and is there a 2027 exam date?

There is no globally shared 2027 PMP test day or single annual registration close. Apply through PMI, then choose from available appointments after eligibility approval.

Is every question scored, and can I review earlier questions after my break?

PMI's July 2026 outline specifies 180 questions, including 10 unscored pretest items. For centre-based exams, the two 10-minute breaks divide sections, and a previous section cannot be reopened once its break begins. Online candidates must check PMI's modality-specific instructions.
